Demon’s voice captured my imagination and heart unlike any literary narrator: a little sarcastic, a little wry, a little optimistic, a little raw, insightful, and innocent. How can such a tale of woe feel hopeful?

Barbara Kingsolver writes to show ‘city folk’ the Appalachian people and experience in all their beauty and complexity. Her love of the topography and inhabitants is evident. Her frustration for the exploitation of both is also evident.

For sure the book of the year and decade … perhaps the book of the century. I loved Demon from the get-go and couldn’t put this down.

Five stars. Highly recommend. Great for discussion.
