2023 for Book Chicks was the YEAR OF THE ANIMALS. This, our second novel about RABBITS (the first was our classic pick Watership Down). Weird how the stars can align for such a list when each of us came with a suggestion independent of others. Are animals trending?
This novel has so many themes .. as if they bred … and multiplied … exponentially … that your book club discussion will likely be very different from ours.
Set in South Bend, Indiana it’s a look at a post-industrial city at the “Crossroads of America.” An apartment complex, an interesting array of inhabitants and a natural disaster.
Tess Gunty’s debut novel is complex, perplexing, overwhelming, fascinating, theological and more. Some core questions I pondered were
- Where is home?
- What is refuge?
- To whom/for whom are we responsible?
Great discussion pick: many Chicks found the book a better read after our conversation. Four stars.
