I love love. From the title, I thought this would be a love story. And it is, ish. It’s not the swooning kind. It’s the long life warts and all kind. Which some may find uplifting. I WAS LOOKING FOR UPLIFTING. I wanted to swoon.
I did fall in love with Central Park, though, which is as much a character as Abe and Jane and their son Max. Who knew so many things happen in Central Park?
The narration is mostly from Abe, taking notes from Jane as she lays in her final days. They record what they remember of their own lives and their life together. It’s a little awkward because many of the paragraphs start with “You remember…” Childhood, parenting, careers, post partum depression, aging, loneliness, and, yes, their love story. I think what felt unsatisfying is the unevenness of their devotion.
