my take: After enjoying Emily, Alone so much I wanted to check out other books by Stewart O’nan. Browsing for Christmas gifts at the local book store, I spied this.
This was not the book to read just before Christmas (winter, dark) and just before my wedding anniversary (29 years) … I found it really depressing. I pressed on because of the subtitle: a love story. I clung to that phrase.
It’s a slim volume packed with all manner of marital woe. Heavy stuff. Better summer reading.
Nonetheless, I’ll be looking for other books by Stu.
my source: the good reads table at Reader’s World, Holland
my verdict: worth a read … when it’s not so dark out
Emily, Alone made me want to pick up other Stewart O'Nan books too – the one I got is the Emily prequel though, and I just can't quite bring myself to read it because there's no way it can be good. The other one of his that I thought sounded quite good was Last Night at the Lobster. Maybe try that one next…
