my take: As I was in my good not great reading slump, a friend suggested this as a possibility to break the cycle. And she was right.
This was a page turner in the vein of State of Wonder but set in an earlier time period (contemporary vs 1930’s) and another jungle (New Guinea vs the Amazon). There’s a love triangle, a wild jungle, a bruised ego, and opposing approaches to anthropology.
The book raises the issue of how we can learn about a culture through our presence there for observation and how extra-culutral presence influences the culture, thereby inevitably changing it.
my source: thanks to reading and tennis friend Christine for the recommend
my verdict: excellent read
Yay, something fun for the next (tomorrow) overseas trek.
