At the end of a vacay I was out of reading material and browsing an airport bookstore. This was “Selected as one of Barack Obama’s Summer 2022 Reading List Picks!” Well, alright. His picks are usually spot on.

Oof. And he is not a mother. If you are a mother, this may be a difficult read! It’s more Margaret Atwood than, say, Jodi Picoult or Celeste Ng. I did not know what I was walking into.

Imagine if all the cliches of motherhood became the law of the land. And negligent mothers were sent to a reform school.

Having worked with women in recovery, I know how hard it is to get your children back once you’ve been deemed negligent and this book hits that over and over and felt too overwhelmingly real. Also the expectations of motherhood without a supportive society.

Tough read and really well-written.
